Tour 2: Sydney to Avalanche Homestead via Canberra

Day 1

Avalanche Homestead

You are met at your Sydney hotel by your Avalanche Homestead representative and transfer to your luxury 4WD vehicle. You drive south down the scenic Illawarra coast and inland across the rolling grazing lands of the Southern Highlands to the national capital, Canberra. Your private tour of Canberra covers the history of the city. You will see Parliament House, many of the foreign embassies and the Australia War Memorial.

After a 45 km (30 mile) journey south to the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, you arrive at Avalanche Homestead in time for afternoon tea. You can take a stroll around the gardens, have a dip in the in-ground pool or watch the kangaroos and mountain parrots, including the raucous cockatoos and galahs, as they move into the open grasslands for their evening feeding.

You join your hosts for a relaxing candlelight dinner in the Baronial Hall. Afterwards, you can experience a 4WD spotlighting safari into the surrounding bush where you can capture on film and video some of Australia's unique animals and birds including kangaroos, possums and owls. Wild pigs, rabbits and foxes are also often seen on these safaris.

Day 2

After a traditional Australian country breakfast, you can join in the many activities that take place on a working sheep and cattle property. Depending on the season, there are cattle and sheep to be moved, sorted or drenched in the yards, or orphaned animals to be fed. You can join in these activities on horseback (there are horses to suit the most inexperienced or most accomplished riders) or by 4WD vehicle. Depending on the weather, you can also try your hand at shearing a sheep.

For birdwatchers there are wonderful walks where you can see and hear many of the great variety of birds to be to be found in the bush. You may even be lucky enough to catch sight of the beautiful but elusive lyrebird. At the mid-morning break, sample the traditional Australian damper, washed down with a mug of steaming billy tea brewed over an open fire.

You can go horse riding across the rolling hills of the property or try catching a trout in the well stocked dams(basic fishing gear is provided) or, if total relaxation is your choice, the perfect spot is by the swimming pool with a book from the extensive library.

At the close of the day, you wont want to miss the sunset on the distant hills - a most spectacular sight as you join your hosts for pre-dinner drinks.

Day 3

Following a traditional Australian country breakfast, you transfer to Canberra for your onward connections.
